Dog Kennels - Single vs. Double

Can I still use a black plastic crate pan in my Artsy Dog Kennel?
Our sizes are designed to fit 'Midwest Homes for Pets' brand black plastic crate pans that come in ugly metal crates. This is so you can still use a pan if you choose to. You do not HAVE to use a crate pan. CRATE PAN NOT INCLUDED. Artsy Dog Condos are designed so the crate pan is easily removable from a slot in the side, incase of a major doggie accident. This brand of crate pan can be purchased through Amazon ranging from $11 for Small - $28 for XLarge. Find correct crate pans here.
Artsy Dog Kennel size = Midwest Homes for Pets Pan Size
(Doubles use same crate pans as singles, just order 2 instead of 1)
Medium = 30-Inch (LS)
Large = 36-inch (LS)
XLarge = 42-Inch
Can I order a custom size to fit my space?
Yes. Our sizes are similar to the ugly black metal wire kennels. We say similar because all brands are a little different and our dimensions include the wood framing around the interior space. Custom sizing may not accommodate the plastic crate pans our kennels are designed for so just keep that in mind. If you are not sure what size you need, message us the dimensions of your space and we will help you with the decision.
I have more than two dogs or two different sized dogs, what are my options?
If you have more than two dogs or two different sized dogs, we can create a custom design for you. Send us a custom request with some details about the size of your dogs, their current crate sizes and the dimensions of your space, we will send you a quote. It's that simple.
What is the process to build a kennel and how long does it take?
All our kennels start with a detailed CAD drawing and rough cut lumber. We begin milling the wood to specific thicknesses and preparing to cut all the pieces for your kennel. Once the cuts are made, we let the wood sit for a few days to acclimate, then give it a light sanding. We are now ready to layout the design and begin building! We use a mortise & tenon woodworking technique and glue to assemble the frame. While that is drying, we cut all the rest of the wood for the sides and flooring. The frame and pieces are then sent to the finish room. We begin with a finish sanding, clean off the dust, then begin staining and painting process. After that, it's time to apply multiple coats of sealer and give everything the proper amount to dry time. When we are sure the sealer is cured, we move onto the final assembly. As we complete final assembly, the pallet and box for shipping are next on the list. We build a custom box for each kennel and secure it to the pallet with nylon strapping. The entire process to build the kennel and get it shipped is approximately 14-21 days.
What kind of wood is used to build Artsy Dog Kennels?
Our Dog Kennels are built out of Poplar and Ash hard woods. Type of wood depends on the finish you choose. Stain does not look the same on both kinds of wood. We select the best combination of wood for the finish you choose. Typically, the kennel bottom is Poplar and the top is Ash. All Ash is an upgrade.
What kind of products do you use to finish the kennels?
We use Varathane Stains, Junk Gypsy Chalk & Clay Paint, and Minwax Poly or General FInishes High Performance as topcoat sealer. The brand of paint we use depends on the type of finish you choose. The rebar is cleaned and sealed with matte clear spray. Standard rebar always has a little bit of rust. It is part of the rustic appeal so we do not remove all the rust. The rebar can be painted upon request for a small fee.
What upgrades are available and how much do they cost?
We offer upgrades for the kennel tops & rebar. Top upgrades are typically cherry, oak, walnut or reclaimed wood. Exotic hardwoods also available upon request. Upgrade prices for tops vary by kennel size and wood availability, ranging from $50-$350. Standard rebar can be upgraded to steel rods textured like wooden sticks. The price also varies by condo size, ranging $75-$175. Hardware upgrades can include handles, locks and hinges. Additional locks can also be added. Locks are $35 each. Hardware upgrades are $25+. Please send us a custom request for upgrades.
We do not have samples of reclaimed wood in the shop. Part of the character of reclaimed wood is the fact that it's all unique. We don't always know what it will look like until we clean it up and sand it a little. Our supplier has a variety but the pricing and availability is always changing. Please keep in mind that reclaimed wood is unique and cannot be fully replicated. If you choose a reclaimed wood top, we will work with you during the design process and create a couple samples for you to choose from. You can send us pictures of what you want and we will do our best to find a comparable option. Or we can send you pictures of reclaimed wood we have access to at that time.
What are finishes offered? What do the finish options mean?
The Paint option includes a painted bottom with a stain top. Please type your selected paint and stain colors into the 'Order Notes' section at checkout.
The Stain option is all stain. The top and bottom can be the same or different stain colors. Please type your selected stain color(s) into the 'Order Notes' section at checkout.
The Shabby Rustic option is a finish that requires multiple layers including stain and paint. The top is stain and the bottom is shabby. The shabby finish has a lightly distressed/worn look when it's complete. It's stained, then painted in an artistic fashion, and sanded to distress, making each kennel rustic and unique. Please type your selected paint and stain colors into the 'Order Notes' section at checkout.
As always, custom requests are welcome. Please message us your dream kennel idea and we will make it come to life!
Why does Shabby Rustic finish cost more?
Shabby Rustic requires a lot of additional steps to achieve the fabulous finish. This finish requires multiple layers including: stain, sealer, a few coats of paint, sanding and additional sealer topcoats.
What is the bottom of the kennel made out of?
The subfloor is poplar wood slats and the floors 1/2" birch plywood. The subflooring is screwed in using Kreg screws and the plywood is screwed onto the subfloor. This is the only place we use screws on the kennel. The reason is so the floor could easily be replaced in the event of a major doggie accident. The bottom is sealed and sturdy.
Are the dog kennel tops removable? Why?
Yes. The top is removable. Our Dog Kennels are built out of solid hardwood and they are heavy. The tops are one of the heaviest pieces and also make the kennel wider because of the overhang. To make the piece of furniture more manageable for our customers to move around and get through doorways, we do not glue the top onto the furniture. There are wood blocks attached to the bottom of the top to keep it from sliding or moving once it is placed on the kennel.
Is the divider removable? Can I get a solid divider my pets cannot see through?
All Double Kennels come with the standard divider unless customer specifies they do no want it. The standard divider is optional and is NOT removable. The standard divider is the same as the sides of the kennel. Your pets will be able to see each other and likely touch noses through the rebar. We can build a divider that IS removable per your request, for no additional charge.
Are the kennel legs/feet optional?
All our kennels come with legs or feet. Medium and Large have legs. The legs are removed for shipping and come packaged inside your kennel. They screw into furniture barrels installed on the bottom of the kennel. The legs are optional. XLarge and Giant size condos have wood feet that elevate them off the ground. Legs are not recommended on the XLarge and Giant sizes as it decreases stability. If you do not want legs/feet on your kennel, please note when placing your order.
